Mexico is best told in the dark

Immersive blind dinners where you eat and talk about Mexican culture, history and mythology. From Mictlán to the Revolution, from La Llorona to mezcal: every course opens a new chapter of the country —and you play a role in it.

The idea

Taste Mexico, listen to Mexico

Without sight, corn, cacao, chile and agave are perceived with a whole new intensity. On that foundation we build dinners where two hosts in character —an Aztec princess, the heroine of Mexican independence, the Lady of the Dead, a revolutionary Adelita— tell an episode of Mexican culture while the guests solve it with their palates.

You are not a spectator: you are a spirit, a spy, an accomplice or a recruit inside the story. When the lights come back on, the table discovers what they ate and why: the ingredients, their origin and the history or legend behind them. It's entertainment, and also a completely different way to get to know the country.

  • Mythology, history, legends and flavors of origin in one immersive format.
  • Perfect for Day of the Dead, Mexican Independence Day, cultural weeks or food festivals.
  • For Mexicans abroad who want to reconnect with their roots, and for anyone discovering Mexico for the first time.
  • Available in Mexico and ready to travel to other countries.

Day of the Dead: The Threshold of Mictlán

Mictecacíhuatl · The Xoloitzcuintle

The line between the world you know and the afterlife has faded. You have crossed the veil, but your soul has lost its way in the shadows of the underworld.

From the darkness rises an imposing presence: Mictecacíhuatl, the Lady of the Dead. Tonight, in her kingdom, nothing is granted without a test. Beside her lurks an elusive figure: the Xoloitzcuintle, the sacred dog who has taken human form tonight to judge your steps.

Tonight you are not a simple guest: you are a spirit trying to find its way home. For the doors of the world of the living to open again, you must prove that your essence still remembers what it means to be alive.

Immersed in darkness, you will rebuild by touch the ofrenda —the Day of the Dead altar offering— that connects you to life. Guided only by your hands and working with your table, you must assemble the offering that best pleases the gods, all while eating the dishes Mictecacíhuatl has left to enlighten you.

If your senses betray you and the offering does not satisfy the goddess, the doors will close and you will become an eternal guest at her banquet. Are you ready to cross the threshold?

The Tomb of Pakal

A tomb raider · The Spirit of the Maya Priest

You are part of a team of explorers visiting the Tomb of Pakal, the great Maya ruler of Palenque. A supernatural force triggers a cave-in and seals you inside. You are no longer an explorer: you are a prisoner in the suffocating darkness of the vault.

Beside you, a tomb raider turns out to be the one who caused the accident: her greed set off one of the ancient traps. From the millennial darkness, the Spirit of the Maya Priest awakens and issues a decree: the underworld does not return what it swallows unless the intruders prove themselves worthy of the light.

Your only salvation is the spirit's trial: a ritual banquet waiting before you. The prophecy says that to move the stone and open the way, you must first align the cosmos. Without sight, only your palate can track down the “five suns” hidden among the textures of your dishes.

Each time your senses confirm a sacred sphere, your table must act as one ritual body: raising your glasses, you will strike the crystal and perfectly reproduce the ancestral rhythm you were taught before crossing the threshold. That exact cadence is the acoustic key that turns the gears of the pyramid. If memory fails, if the rhythm breaks or you mistake an illusion for a sun, the stone mechanism will lock forever, and your last breath will become Pakal's newest offering.

The Flight of the Eagle Warrior

The Priestess of the Moon · The Eagle Warrior

The waters of Lake Texcoco are still, but something strange stirs in the shadows of the temples. The gods are hungry and demand tribute before the sun rises, or dawn will never shine again.

The Priestess of the Moon demands absolute devotion to the ancient rites in order to save a new day. To help you, the Eagle Warrior welcomes you into the Aztec military elite. To prove you have the courage of the true lords of war, you must face the trial of the gods: deprived of light, you will consume an offering worthy of them.

You must chew blindly and take in every bite from the Priestess while completing the Eagle Warrior's trials. If you are not fit for the final battle, your weakness will be your sentence, and your soul will fall, unworthy of seeing the light of the new sun.

The Labyrinth to Mictlán

A xolo guide · A minion of the underworld

Your time among the living has run out and you have begun your journey to Mictlán, the Aztec underworld. The blindfolds over your eyes are the first tribute, for the dead need no light to find their destiny. You are trapped in the first level of the underworld, a desolate wasteland where souls that lose their way wander forever in oblivion.

A xolo —the hairless dog that, according to tradition, guides the dead— will lead you through the obstacles toward the land of Mictlantecuhtli, while a minion from another world tries to block your path. In the darkness you will find small pieces of corn masa, and by touch alone you must assemble the offerings needed to pass to the next level. The xolo will tell you with barks which ingredient or ingredients are correct at each step.

If your offerings are right, you will advance through each level. If not, you will remain stuck somewhere in the pre-Hispanic underworld.

The Descent into Xibalbá

The Lord of the Night · Xbalanqué

You have been dragged alive into the jaws of Xibalbá, the Maya underworld. The descent is complete and the darkness around you is absolute. You have been chosen as trophies of flesh and blood, condemned to remain forever in the caverns of death.

The Lord of the Night, absolute ruler of fear, does not want to kill you right away: he wants to break your sanity slowly, disorienting you until you beg for the end. But you have an unexpected ally: Xbalanqué. The hero twin of the Popol Vuh knows the traps of this hell better than anyone and has slipped in to offer you a single chance to cheat your fate.

The wine of Xibalbá will be poured before you. But the Lord of the Night is a master of deceit: using the blindness of the room, he will violently rearrange your table, mixing the cups of pure energy with those filled from the River of Rot.

Xbalanqué has secretly marked the way to salvation. In the dark and amid the chaos, you must feel the base of the cups with your fingertips, searching for a tactile anomaly. Your mission is to find the safe chalice and identify the safe wine. Choose the Lord of the Night's river, and a violent numbness will paralyze your tongue: you will lose your voice for the rest of the night and your soul will remain anchored to the underworld forever.

The tribe's Shaman tells you that to recover your memories you must be willing to lose your humanity. His companion, the Healer, reminds you that if you want to remember, you must taste your own land.

Together they offer you the “Nectar of Shadows”, divided into different infusions; each one reveals a part of the trance into the past. When the trance ends, the profiles of the teas will reveal the animals that will protect and guide your destiny. Finally, your hosts will celebrate your rebirth and let you open your eyes to a new reality.

A Mexica princess · A Spanish deserter

The capital of the Aztec empire is collapsing. Outside, the echoes of battle and the clash of steel ring through the flooded streets of Tenochtitlan: you are about to live through La Noche Triste, the “Night of Sorrows” of 1520.

In a secret hideout, two unlikely allies who have defied their own sides are waiting for you: a Mexica princess, bearer of the blood and secrets of her lineage, and a Spanish soldier who has deserted, trading his loyalty to the crown for the promise of survival. Together they have recovered the legendary treasure of Moctezuma. To smuggle it out under the eyes of their pursuers, they have hidden it in the most unlikely place: the banquet about to be served before you.

Tonight you stop being a spectator and become an accomplice in the heist that will rewrite history. Your mission is to taste each dish and discover how many pieces of the treasure it contains.

You must sharpen your senses and keep an exact count of the gold pieces your palate finds, without saying a word to your tablemates. A single miscalculation could expose the whole operation. Can you recover the treasure?

The Inquisitor · A Heretic

You have been thrown into the secret catacombs beneath the old streets of the Holy Office, where the colonial Inquisition of New Spain will judge you. You are trapped in the darkness among the barrels and, if you do not find the hidden escape tunnel before the guards come down, you will be walled in alive.

The Inquisitor is willing to let you rot if you are of no use to the crown, and he will use every trick he knows. A Heretic secretly tells you that he knows every crack in the cellar: the only way out is hidden behind a false wall that opens only with the right key.

The Inquisitor will serve you shots of rum to break you and make you tell him what he wants to hear. You must search the rums for the clues the Heretic gives you and decide which of them hold the keys to your escape. Choose the right ones and place them in the perfect order, and your escape is sealed. If not, the most terrible of executions awaits.

The Secret of Independence

Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez · An insurgent messenger

It is 1810 and the rumors are no longer gossip: the conspiracy for Mexico's independence has been discovered and royalist troops are at the door. The heavy iron locks have been shut by order of the Corregidor himself, trapping you in the suffocating darkness of the basement.

In the darkness, Doña Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez —“La Corregidora”, heroine of the independence movement— demands absolute loyalty to the cause. She has an insurgent messenger at her command. His horse is saddled and he must ride to San Miguel el Grande to warn the captains, but he cannot leave blind: he needs the password, and the basement is surrounded by spies.

Before you waits a secret three-course dinner, but the royalists have tampered with the food. Your mission is to decode the escape route through her famous taconazo —the heel taps she used, according to history, to warn the conspirators. In the silence of the room, La Corregidora will begin striking the wooden floor with her heel, marking a secret cadence.

You must listen closely, memorize the sequence and repeat the exact rhythm with your own foot so the code travels across the table to the messenger. That same beat is your key to survival: the taps tell you the precise order in which to eat each bite in the dark without being discovered by the intruder. Lose the rhythm, let fear slow you down or bite into the wrong course, and you will swallow betrayal and the insurgency will die with you in this basement before seeing the light of a new nation.

The Intercepted Telegraph

La Adelita · An ambushed General

You are in the middle of the Mexican Revolution. The constant clicking of the telegraph has suddenly gone silent. The federal army has cut the camp's power and you cannot see your own hand. You are surrounded; the ambush is imminent.

Only two people can help you escape the firing squad. One is La Adelita, the woman who leads the revolutionary operations from the shadows —her name is the one Mexico gave to the women who fought in the Revolution. Beside her is an ambushed General who desperately needs the final order to launch the counterattack before the federal troops wipe out everything and everyone.

The enemy is watching every move and has intercepted the usual lines, but the resistance has one last, undetectable channel. Tonight you are the troop's most vital spy network. The decisive message is not written on paper: it is masterfully encoded in the food before you.

Isolated in the darkness, your mission is to taste. Each course hides a message in Morse code that you can only decipher by chewing. You must translate the sensory pattern in your mind and, like a true secret cell, whisper the message across the table, link by link, until the exact order reaches the General.

If the chain breaks, if the message is distorted on your palate or the enemy hears your whispers, the camp will be massacred at dawn. Are you ready to chew on the rebellion, crack the code and give the order to fire?

The Zapatista Interrogation

The General · His lieutenant

You have been dragged to a Zapatista camp hidden in the mountains, with thick burlap hoods over your heads. During the Mexican Revolution, Emiliano Zapata's Liberation Army of the South fought for land for the peasants —and you are the main suspects of having sold the battalion's position to the federal army.

The General and his lieutenant know that traitors only recognize European food: the food of the hacendados, the wealthy landowners. The firing squad is waiting for the order, but the lieutenant decides to give you one last chance to join the cause.

You will taste a series of classic Mexican tacos. If you can describe the ingredients of each guisado (the stew inside), you will prove your loyalty to the Army of the South. If you can't, your betrayal will be exposed and you will face the firing squad.

The Oath of the Revolution

The General · The Lieutenant

You were taken from your homes blindfolded and marched, stumbling, for hours to the heart of a guerrilla camp. You are surrounded by armed men. You are not prisoners: you are the new recruits. But in times of war, the line between a rookie ally and an enemy spy is so thin that there must be a process.

The General and the Lieutenant have designed a series of tests that the recruits must pass by the campfire. The General orders a single jug of raw clay, heavy and porous, to pass from hand to hand, each time filled with a different mezcal —the agave spirit of Oaxaca and many other Mexican regions. You must drink and get ready for the test the Lieutenant sets in each round.

Pass every test and the Iron General will accept you as blood brothers. Make a mistake or cough, and the Lieutenant will confirm her suspicions, cock her rifle in the dark and declare you infiltrated spies.

The Silver Mine

A trapped miner · An unknown entity

Tons of solid rock have sealed the only exit of the silver mine —the kind that made colonial Mexico one of the richest places on earth— raising a cloud of dust that blinds you completely. The carbide lamps have flickered out, leaving you buried alive in the belly of the earth.

Beside you is a trapped miner, his hands torn from digging at the stone. But in the depths of this vein, the real terror is not the lack of air: whispering from the cracks, with a ghostly, icy echo that seems to bounce inside your own mind, waits an unknown entity.

Survival in this abyss will not depend on strength, but on fairness. In total darkness, the entity will test the survivors' morals by handing them scarce rations in deceptively irregular shapes. Your mission is to ration life: turned into human scales, you must feel and weigh each piece blindly and debate how to split the loot into mathematically equal parts for everyone at the table.

But the mountain sees everything. At the climax of the test, a sudden, violent flash of red emergency lights will flood the room for a second and reveal the truth about your plates. If the hosts discover that fear or selfishness won someone over and they took a bigger share, mercy is over: the entity will unleash its punishment on the greedy and force them to drink a deadly sip.

The Echo of La Llorona

A medium · A skeptical priest

The echo of an ancestral wail rises in the middle of an ordinary banquet. It is La Llorona —the Weeping Woman, Mexico's most famous ghost, who wanders the rivers crying for her children. An icy breath from the river has snuffed out every candle in the church. The darkness is absolute. Outside, the current carries a spirit that finds no rest; inside, the spirit has crossed the threshold.

In the gloom, a medium who knows that urban legends are real warnings tries to stop the creature from wreaking havoc. Meanwhile, a skeptical priest, clinging to reason, refuses to accept that his sanctuary has been desecrated. But the wailing demands an offering from the guests, and if its conditions are not met, no one may make it home.

Tonight, survival depends on your sense of taste. Your table will be served a series of deceptively sweet, comforting bites. But every round hides a trap: one of those bites holds the very essence of a tear.

If fate chooses you to receive this offering and you fail to recognize it, you will turn to stone. To face it, your mission is to swallow the tear and absorb La Llorona's agony without making a single sound or face. If your expression cracks, if instinct betrays you and you let out one moan, the spirit will know exactly where you are. The weeping will fall upon your table and the darkness will claim you forever. Do you have the physical and mental strength to swallow the pain before she finds you?

The Alley of the Kiss

Don Luis · Doña Carmen

The cobblestones of Guanajuato are deserted. The streetlamps have gone out at once, swallowed by a thick fog. You have crossed the threshold of time and are trapped in the exact moment when love was cut down by intolerance, in the city's most famous legend: the Callejón del Beso, an alley so narrow that two lovers could kiss from facing balconies.

Leaning over the abyss, condemned to relive their agony in an endless loop of shadows, two ghosts wander. On one side, the spirit of Don Luis clings to the stone. Just inches away, the shadow of Doña Carmen carries the invisible weight of her own father's dagger. Tragedy has anchored them to this alley, and their only salvation depends on you.

To break the curse and free the lovers, the guests must complete the pact they left unfinished. You will reach out over the void, guided only by whispers in the dark, to find the matching half waiting in the fingers of the person in front of you. Only by joining the opposite poles and blending the flavors before bringing them to your mouth will you seal the kiss that tragedy stole. Succeed, and the spirits' chains will break. But if the flavors remain apart, the balcony will close over you and the lovers' laments will become your new prison forever.

The Cursed Lotería

El Catrín · La Bandera

What was once a fairground game has become a trap. Lotería —Mexico's beloved picture-card bingo, with its iconic figures— has been shuffled by the Devil himself, and tonight you have been swallowed by it.

From the shadows steps El Catrín, the dandy, inviting you to bet your own soul without you noticing. Beside him comes La Bandera, the flag, who has spent centuries trying to win her ticket out. Both know the only rule of this underworld: the house always wins, unless you can read the cards in the dark.

To break the spell and return to the world of the living, you must play the game blindfolded. The traditional call of the cantor —the caller who announces each card— is dead; now the deck reveals itself only through your palate. A procession of dark bites, designed to trick your mind and challenge your memory, will arrive at the center of your table. You must taste the very essence of each figure and solve the riddle.

Dive into the textures and write down the name of each card. If your palate is right, you will win a hand against the Devil. But if instinct betrays you and you call out the wrong figure, your souls will be printed on the board forever, condemned to become the newest attraction of this eternal Lotería.

It has capsized at one of Xochimilco's most sinister places: the Island of the Dolls, where hundreds of old dolls hang from the trees.

Guarding this plastic purgatory rises the spirit of Don Julián, who welcomes you with a banquet. He knows the rules for surviving the island, but its true owner has already noticed you: from the fog, the drowned girl demands an immediate tribute. She wants new toys for her collection.

Your only salvation is the offering. If you want to see the dawn and not end up hanging by the neck from the branches of the chinampa, you must calm her fury. In absolute darkness, you will reach beneath your seat and feel blindly for the small remains of a toy. Your mission is to put it together in the gloom.

On one side, master of mysticism's darkest forces, waits the Great Sorcerer. On the other rises the White Healer, trying to weave protective spells over the guests. Good and evil have collided, and your soul is the battlefield.

The banquet is a place where curses travel invisibly through the air. Deprived of sight, your only defense will be a blind sensory limpia —the traditional spiritual cleansing— to discover which energy has claimed you. The elements of a botanical amulet will reach your hands. Your mission is to rub these ingredients vigorously between your palms until the scent merges with your skin, then bring your face close and smell what lies before you.
